The IGAD Monitoring and Verification Mechanism for South Sudan, headquartered in Juba,  was set up shortly after the signing of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and SPLM/A – IO on 23 January 2014. Its mission is to support the mediation process by monitoring, investigating and reporting the two Parties’ compliance with the Agreement.

At the moment, Monitoring and Verification Teams (MVTs) constituted under the MVM to undertake these functions have a presence in Bor, Bentiu, Malakal, Melut, Nassir and Pariang.

In addition, in line with the decision of the IGAD Heads of State and Government in March 2014 and the UNSC Council Resolution 2155, the first batch  of Ethiopian military personnel of the regional Protection Force as integral part of UNMISS, was deployed in South Sudan in June 2014.  The new Force Commander of the restructured UNMISS force from Ethiopia has also taken up his position.

Similar deployments of contingents from the Republic of Djibouti, Kenya and Rwanda are expected to deploy shortly as part of the regional Protection Force.

The goal of the strengthened UNMISS mission, integrating the Regional Protection Force is to take all steps necessary to protect civilians and the monitors verifying the cessation of hostilities between the warring parties.
