Nov. 18, 2019 (JUBA, South Sudan) IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan, Ambassador Dr. Ismail Wais, presided over a two-day workshop for the security mechanisms of the Revitalized Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict on South Sudan (R-ARCSS). The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), the Ceasefire & Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring & Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) and the African Union Commission (AUC). The workshop will focus on producing a costed work plan and matrix with specific timelines and responsibilities that conform to the agreed upon one hundred (100) days extension.
The mechanisms of the peace agreement including National Pre-transitional Committee (NPTC), Joint Defence Board (JDB), Joint Transitional Security Committee (JTSC), Joint Military Ceasefire Commission (JMCC), Strategic Defence and Security Review Board (SDSR) Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission (DDR Commission), United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Representatives of the diplomatic Missions in South Sudan and security experts.
The Special Envoy noted that the new 100-days timeframe offers another opportunity for the planning and execution of the pending tasks. However, he urged participants to plan for 60 days instead to avoid any risk of missing deadlines due to upcoming holidays and weekends.
Ambassador Ismail reiterated IGAD's continued commitment and assistance in mobilising support towards the completion of the pending tasks and the overall success of the South Sudan peace process.
